Denmark's dressage sport is currently in a state of flux: the issues surrounding horse welfare, training methods and ethical guidelines are shaping a debate that is currently very present in Denmark. In the midst of these developments, the Danish stud farm Blue Hors has now announced that it is suspending participation in dressage competitions for an initial period of three months.
"We believe that equestrian sport and horse welfare are inextricably linked - and that the welfare of horses must always have top priority," Blue Hors explained in an official statement on Instagram. The decision is in the context of the Danish Equestrian Federation's new strategy "Sammen om hestevelfærd" ["Together for Animal Welfare"], which, among other things, advocates clearer ethical guidelines and a reform of the evaluation criteria.
Blue Hors will continue to operate as normal during the show break. The planned stallion show and open day on March 29 will take place as planned. After three months, the stud will reassess whether a greater consensus has developed with regard to ethical standards in dressage sport.
