Cornet Obolensky

Cornet Obolensky hit the breeding scene like a comet. The stallion, now 23 years old, fulfilled and exceeded all hopes and expectations placed in him. Although the stallion was mainly used for breeding, during his active sporting career under Marco Kutscher he won both bronze at the German Championships in Balve in 2008, the Nations Cups in Rotterdam and Rome and even took part in the Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2011, Cornet Obolensky became European Show Jumping Team Champion with Marco Kutscher.

Discovered by chance in Belgium

He is considered the most successful German show jumper and meanwhile has over 3000 successful offspring. But Cornet Obolensky's success in sport and breeding is by no means a coincidence.insert picture 2 here caption: Cornet Obolensky and Marco Kutscher at the FEI World Cup Final 2009. Born in 1999 in Belgium on the farm of Thierry Degraeve, Cornet Obolensky was already discovered as a talent as a foal by breeder Heinrich Ramsbrock - purely by chance. Ramsbrock was immediately impressed by the elastic movements of the young grey stallion. After his arrival in Germany in 2001, Cornet Obolensky was named 2nd Reserve Champion at the 11th NRW Main Licensing. Afterwards, the breeders' community was full of praise for this exceptional talent. The jumping disposition and joy of movement were literally written all over his face and according to the licensing management it was "the licensing where the star of the Cornet Obolensky rose". After the licensing, the stallion was sold at a high price to Valentin Nychyporenko from the Ukrainian Zhaschkov Stud, who is still his owner today.

Stallion exams at their best

Shortly afterwards, Cornet Obolensky was stationed at the Ligges Stud, which still works closely with his owner Valentin Nychyporenko today. At the stallion performance test in Münster-Harndorf in 2002, the grey stallion passed his stallion exam with top marks. He received a 10.0 in free jumping and under saddle as the best jumping stallion among all 33 participants a 9.24. With the qualification for the Bundeschampionat, Cornet convinced even the last doubter of his outstanding quality. In the following years, the stallion's outstanding sporting career began under Marco Kutscher.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree

Cornet Obolensky's sire is none other than Clinton I. He won numerous major tournaments and Nations Cups under the Belgian Dirk Demeersman. His successes include second place in the Aachen Nations Cup and the Grand Prix of Aachen, as well as placings in the World Cup Jumping in Oslo and the Grand Prix of Aahus. His lifetime earnings total over €200,000.Until his death in 2017, Clinton produced over 15 licensed sons. From his first crop of offspring alone, Cornet Obolensky, Upsilon, Utrillo and President were all licensed.Cornet's dam, Rabanna by Costersveld, was also successful in the sport and won numerous competitions in the UK before she was used for breeding. With these genes, the basic framework for outstanding offspring is in place - and Cornet Obolensky is undoubtedly that.

Rocket launch in breeding

Cornet Obolensky made a special debut at the 2005 licensing: 14 licensed sons, including the Champion Stallion of the Westphalian Horse Licensing, Cornado NRW. Already the foals of Cornet's first crop were auctioned at top prices due to their supple movements and type, for example Consensus, who changed hands for 38,000€. With over 45 licensed sons, Cornet Obolensky dominates the breeding scene for jumping progeny like no other. No wonder that the grey stallion is also very popular with the state studs: Every breeding station counts at least one stallion descending from Cornet Obolensky among its top sires.

Like father, like offspring

Among Cornet's numerous successful offspring, Clooney 51 and Comme il faut stand out in particular. Clooney 51, born in 2006 and bred by the breeder Bernd Richter, won silver at the World Equestrian Games in Tryon 2018 and gold at the European Championships in Rotterdam the following year under the Swiss rider Martin Fuchs. At the beginning of 2022, Clooney received the "FEI Horse of a Lifetime" award due to his successes. The Westphalian stallion Comme il faut, licensed in 2007, won the Westphalian Championships and secured the silver medal at the World Championships for five-year-old show jumpers in 2010 under Franz-Josef Dahlmann. At his stallion performance test, he emerged as the jumping champion. Under Marcus Ehning, he won team silver at the 2019 European Championships in Rotterdam as well as the Grand Prix of Madrid, Vienna and Brussels. The stallion retired from the sport in 2021 at the European Championships in Riesenbeck.

The absolute price record was Cornet Obolensky's offspring Cosinhus. The Hanoverian, bred by Albrecht Middelkampf, was sold as a jumping champion stallion for 600,000€ at the Hanoverian Stallion Market in Verden in 2007. In total, the lifetime earnings of Cornet Obolensky's offspring amount to over 11,800,000€ according to the Ligges Stud. It is therefore not surprising that offspring of Cornet Obolensky continue to be in demand for sport and breeding.

Rescued from Ukraine

In 2022, both Cornet Obolensky and his son Comme il faut were at their owner Valentin Nychyporenko's Ukrainian stud Zhaschkov. When war broke out due to the invasion of Russia, plans were immediately made with Kai Ligges, the manager of Ligges Stud, to bring the two to safety. On 12 March, Kai Ligges and other helpers drove to the border and picked up the two stallions. Since then, Cornet Obolensky has been re-homed at the Ligges Stud in Herbern. Comme il faut moved into his box at Hubert Vornholt's stallion station in Münster.

Exceptional stallion without equal

A look at his success story once again confirms what an exceptional talent Cornet Obolensky is. Although he has not been seen actively in top sport since 2012, he continues to deliver success horse after success horse as a stallion. And as Marco Kutscher once said in an interview: "Cornet is a sensational show jumper who has unbelievable qualities that I don't think you find that often in this world." There is nothing more to add to that!
