What is the Bundeschampionat?

The Bundeschampionat (BuCha for short) is an outstanding event in the context of German equestrian sport, which takes place annually in WarendorfGermany. As a national championship, it plays a central role by focusing on young horses in various disciplines, above all dressage, show jumping and eventing. The intention of the Bundeschampionat is to find and present the most promising young horses in Germany.

The event acts as a stage for horses between the ages of three and seven to showcase their talents and skills within their respective specialties. Participants must first pass rigorous qualifying tests at the regional and national level to qualify for the Federal Championships qualify.

The time frame of the Bundeschampionat usually extends over several days in late summer, mostly towards the end of August and after the CHIO Aachen. During this time, the qualified horses enter the arena to compete in different age and performance classes. Not only the sporting performance of the horses is judged, but also their training, their riding qualities, their character as well as their potential for the future.

The Bundeschampionat occupies an important position in the German equestrian sport by serving as an important instance to win future top horses for the international equestrian sport. Many of the horses that perform remarkably at the Bundeschampionat later compete on the stage of top equestrian sport, take part in national and international competitions and make a significant contribution to the reputation of German equestrian sport.

The competitions at the BuCha

The city Warendorf represents the main venue for the most important competitions. When the Bundeschampionaten are mentioned, this refers in most cases to the event in Warendorf. This outstanding event takes place every year on the first weekend of September and is the highlight in the calendar of many riding and equestrian sports fans. On the extensive grounds of the German Olympic Committee for Equestrianism (DOKR), the action unfolds.

The extensive Warendorf program includes a variety of disciplines and categories competing for the Bundeschampionat titles:

  • Young riding horses and ponies aged three and four are judged in two main categories, namely stallions on the one hand and mares and geldings on the other.
  • In the classes for five and six year old dressage horses and ponies, the aim is to select the best talents in this discipline.
  • Likewise, the five- and six-year-old show jumpers will be tested for their abilities and performance.
  • The eventing competitions, which place a special demand on the versatility of the horses, are held in the age categories of five- and six-year-olds.
  • Eventing ponies in the five- and six-year-old age groups are also an essential part of the Bundeschampionate.

In each of these age groups, the federal champions are determined separately for both horses and ponies. The competitions extend over several exciting days, during which the participants demonstrate their skills and face the judgment of the experts. The highlight of this event is undoubtedly the ceremonial honoring of the Bundeschampions, who are the result of hard work and exceptional talent.

Interesting facts about the Bundeschampionat

Originally the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf were organized by Escon Marketing GmbH until 2010. From 2011, the organization of the event was transferred from the German Equestrian Federation to En Garde Marketing. The DKB was the proud main sponsor of this prestigious event for a period of eleven years, namely from 2011 to 2021. HKM took over this role at the start of 2022, paving the way for the HKM National Championships paved the way.

Another venue for the Bundeschampionate is the picturesque Moritzburg in Saxony. Here, on the grounds of the traditional Moritzburg State Stud, the Federal Heavy Warmblood Driving Championships will be held. This discipline provides a stage for four- and five-year-old horses of the breeds (Saxon-Thuringian) Heavy Warmblood, Altoldenburg/East Friesian and Altwürttemberger with German pedigree. In addition to this category, the Bundeschampionat of the German Driving Ponies was also held here from 2002 to 2008. Every year, towards the end of August, enthusiasts and professionals gather here to see the best driving horses in action and admire their skills.

The history of the Bundeschampionat

Since it was first held in 1976, the Bundeschampionat has followed a fascinating path through the world of German equestrian sport. Originally an event that constantly changed location, the competition found a permanent home in Warendorf in 1994, which still serves as a vibrant centerpiece for equestrian sport today. The decision to permanently anchor the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf laid the foundation for the development of an unparalleled event focused on promoting and recognizing emerging equine talent.

The year 2002 was a turning point in the history of the Bundeschampionat, when the Bundeschampionat for heavy warmbloods was moved out of Warendorf for the first time and relocated to Moritzburg. This change provided the opportunity to focus even more specifically on the different horse breeds and disciplines. It marked a step towards a broader and more diverse presentation of horse breeding and equestrian sport in Germany.

An unforgettable event occurred in 2006, when the 6-year-old pony stallion Voyager 2 showed a truly remarkable double performance at the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf. He not only captured the title of Bundeschampion in the eventing pony category, but also shone in the 6-year-old dressage pony division. This triumphant moment not only emphasized the extraordinary versatility of a single horse, but also showed the top-class abilities of the young riders and horses who participated in this event.

A highlight of the Warendorf Bundeschampionate was written between 2008 and 2010, when the outstanding Hanoverian stallion Lissaro van de Helle, accompanied by the talented rider Claudia Rüscher, wrote a unique success story. This duo dominated the age classes of three-year-old, four-year-old and five-year-old dressage horses, creating an impressive sequence of titles that underlined the excellence of German horse breeding and training.

The developments in the Federal Championships continued, and in 2011 there was a renewed expansion of the program. In view of previous low numbers of starters in the Bundeschampionat for driving horses, it was decided to allow six-year-old horses to participate. This expansion added an extra dimension to the competition and made it possible to focus on even more up-and-coming talent.

Since 2013, the Warendorf Youngster Championship has set another milestone in the history of the Bundeschampionat. This special classification for 7-year-old show jumpers, which is not run under the traditional "Bundeschampionat" term, offers a platform for horses that have already been successfully placed in advanced (S*) level show jumping competitions. This innovation reflects the constant development and adaptation of the Bundeschampionat to meet the demands of the dynamic equestrian landscape.

Who can take part in the Bundeschampionat?

Young horses between the ages of three and seven can participate in the Bundeschampionat. Participation is possible in various disciplines, including dressage, show jumping and eventing. The horses must first prove their suitability for the Bundeschampionat through qualification tests at regional and national level. The qualifications may vary depending on the discipline and age group.

The following horses may participate in the Bundeschampionat for show jumping, dressage and eventing horses:

Dressage horses

So that the 5-6 year old dressage horses at the Bundeschamionat in Warendorf, they must first qualify at competitions in qualifying tests.

These competitions are organized by various show organizers, where the dressage horses are first given a running-in test to familiarize them with the course beforehand. This is followed by the qualification test, the horses that are graded with an 8.0 or better then qualify for the final in Warendorf.

Show jumpers

For the Bundeschampionate all 5- and 6-year-old horses that receive a final score of 8.0 or better qualify. In addition, the 6-year-old horses must have placed at least once in a medium (M) level show jumping competition by mid-August at the latest. This additional qualification is documented by means of corresponding result lists, which must be provided by the rider/horse owner by the entry deadline.

The jumping test class M* is for 5-year-old horses. These horses must comply with the Breeding Regulations for German Riding Horses (ZVO) of the FN, Breeding Section.

Likewise, a jumping test class M** for 6-year-old horses is scheduled. These horses must meet the breeding regulations for German riding horses (ZVO) of the FN, section breeding.

With regard to the qualifying tests, certain guidelines and requirements are to be observed. It is not allowed to impose handicaps like the exclusion of already qualified horses. Each participating horse must go through a run-in test before the qualification tests. For 5-year old horses, an elementary (L) level show jumping test is recommended, while for 6-year old horses, a medium (M) level show jumping test is required.

Eventing horses

Qualification for the Bundeschampionat for 5-year old and 6-year old eventing horses requires the achievement of specific performances and results that demonstrate the horses' abilities and potential in eventing. The qualification requirements are as follows:

‍5-year-oldhorses:

  • The horses must have received a score of at least 8.0 twice in a cross-country horse test class A*/A** or L. These cross-country horse tests should be varied with typical cross-country obstacles and contain at least one ditch, one water obstacle and one narrow jump according to the FN brochure "Der Geländeaufbau".
  • In addition, a placing in an eventing or combined competition class A*/A** (without style jumping/style cross-country) is required.

‍6-year-oldhorses:

  • The horses must have received a score of at least 8.0 twice in a cross-country horse test class L. Here, too, the cross-country horse tests should be varied and contain at least one ditch, one water obstacle and one narrow jump according to the FN brochure "Der Geländeaufbau".

The qualification must be performed at at least three different venues, whereby only one qualification result can be scored from Combined Tests (either Cross-Country Horse Test OR Combined Test).
