Herpes outbreak in Schleswig-Holstein

First tournaments canceled

According to NDR, a massive herpes outbreak has been detected in a large competition stable in Schleswig-Holstein. According to information from NDR Schleswig-Holstein, 40 of the 60 horses are affected - despite having been vaccinated. One horse has already died as a result of the disease.

In response to the outbreak, several tournaments in the region have been canceled, including the "Club der Springreiter" in Elmshorn planned for next week. Herpes viruses are highly dangerous for horses as they can cause paralysis and, in severe cases, death. Experts emphasize that even vaccinated horses are not completely protected against infection.

State Commission and SH Chamber of Veterinarians call for consistent barn hygiene

On this occasion, the State Commission and the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Veterinarians published a reminder of proven hygiene and quarantine measures. Infection usually occurs through direct contact between horses, less frequently via objects or care staff.

External horse owners need not be overly concerned if the precautionary measures are observed. According to the current state of knowledge, show cancellations are also not mandatory - however, the decision lies with the respective organizers.

Every equestrian athlete can help to prevent infection:

  • No petting other horses on the head or nostrils
  • No direct contact between horses from different herds
  • Do not allow close physical contact after training
  • Wash hands and change clothes when changing stables
