The international Festhalle horse show in Frankfurt is an outstanding event that presents the fascination of equestrian sport in all its glory. For many years, this tournament has attracted riders, spectators and enthusiasts from all over the world. In this article, you will find out everything you need to know about the Festhalle tournament every December.
History of the horse show: a history of tradition and innovation
The origins of the Festhalle Riding Tournament go back a long way and over the years it has developed into a permanent fixture on the international equestrian calendar. From humble beginnings to a globally recognized event, the tournament has developed steadily.
The foundation by Josef Neckermann in 1955
The Frankfurt Festhalle Riding Tournament, initiated by Josef Neckermann in 1955 with an initial budget of 800 German marks, is an important event in the world of equestrian sport. The event, which was held until 1971, returned in 1989 after a 17-year break, organized by the Frankfurt Riding and Driving Club, the City of Frankfurt and the German Equestrian Federation.
A new chapter with SKU Veranstaltungs GmbH
In 1991, a significant change took place when SKU Veranstaltungs GmbH became the new main sponsor and organizer. Despite innovative approaches to remove regional parts of the event, this met with criticism and led to the withdrawal of the Equestrian Sports Association of Hesse as the conceptual sponsor.
The era of PSM GmbH and Dr. Kaspar Funke
PSM GmbH later took over the organization of the tournament, and after the business separation from Paul Schockemöhle in 2002, Dr. Kaspar Funke, the former managing director of PSM, became the organizer of the tournament through the newly founded Escon Marketing GmbH.
Highlights and changes to the program
In 2003, the show was in danger of being canceled, but thanks to the commitment of Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff and Manfred Louven, it took place after all. New program items were introduced in the following years, including the show competition of the Hessian clubs and a World Cup dressage competition in 2005.
Changing organizers: From PST Marketing GmbH to Oceanside GmbH & Co. KG
Organizational responsibility was transferred to PST Marketing GmbH, a Paul Schockemöhle company, in 2012 and lasted until the 2018 tournament. From 2019, Oceanside GmbH & Co. KG, represented by Matthias Rath, took over the organization. One notable change was the upgrading of the international dressage classes from CDI 4* level to CDI 5* in 2019.
Challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic
The years 2020 and 2021 brought challenges, as the Festhalle could not be used for the tournaments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, a replacement tournament was created - the "International Festhalle Riding Tournament Frankfurt - Schafhof Edition", which took place at the Linsenhoff-Rath family's sheep farm in Kronberg im Taunus. In 2021, Oceanside GmbH & Co. KG then became Schafhof Connects GmbH & Co. To this day, Schafhof Connects organizes the Festhalle tournament as well as many other exciting equestrian events.
