FEI introduces measuring instrument for checking nosebands

New regulation comes into force from May 2025

From May 1, 2025, the FEI will check the buckling of nosebands at its events using a specially developed measuring instrument. A corresponding protocol has now been published explaining the application and consequences of the new regulation.

According to FEI protocol, stewards will randomly or specifically check horses at all FEI events. The measuring instrument must be placed under the noseband on the nasal bone and be able to be pulled through from top to bottom. This rule applies to all types of nosebands, both high and low versions.

The check can be carried out both before and after a test. If too tight a buckle is found during the pre-test, the rider or supervisor must loosen the noseband. The horse may only start after another successful check. If the rider refuses to loosen the noseband, a start is not possible and sanctions may follow.

After a test, a noseband that is too tight will result in disqualification and a yellow card. In eventing in particular, however, the inspection should not hinder the rapid cooling of the horses. With this measure, the FEI wants to continue to focus on the welfare of the horses and ensure uniform standards.
