Negro(Ferro x Variant), the KWPN line founder and sire of world record holder Valegro, has passed away at the age of 29.
Bred by Wouter Borgers, the stallion had a promising sport career under Anne van Olst before an injury led to his early retirement from breeding. As a sire, Negro left behind one of the most significant influences in dressage horse breeding. He produced 2119 KWPN-registered offspring, including the double Olympic champion and unsurpassed world record holder Valegro. To date, a total of 33 licensed sons and 34 offspring successful in Grand Prix sport have been registered:
In addition to Valegro, Ferro T under Severo Jurado Lopez, Kjento under Charlotte Fry and Nespresso, who is also presented by Charlotte Fry , among others, are highly successful in the sport. Negro was named "Preferent" stallion in 2012, followed by the honor of KWPN Stallion of the Year in 2017.
His owners Gert-Jan and Anne van Olst said goodbye with a heavy heart. Anne van Olst wrote on Instagram: "My heart is broken [...] One week before your 30th birthday You, Gertjan and I decided that time had come [...] Out of love and respect we had to let you go [...] THANK YOU for everything my LOVE ❤️❤️❤️You will be missed every second of the day, but your spirit will live on forever"
