Official FEI statement on misinformation and fairness
Call for fact-based discussion and responsible reporting
Contents
In an official statement, the FEI emphasizes the central role of media and research in the further development of equestrian sport. Responsible reporting and scientific expertise have contributed significantly to the professionalization and improvement of animal welfare standards. At the same time, the international federation emphasizes the need for an objective and fact-based debate about the sport.
Accordingly, the diversity of voices within the equestrian community, including those who critically question existing practices, is initially recognized by the FEI. These perspectives are crucial to further developing the sport and ensuring the welfare of horses as a top priority. At the same time, however, the FEI warns against misinformation that can arise from omissions, misrepresentations or lack of context and undermine confidence in the sport.
It is particularly worrying that some dressage riders and FEI officials are currently the target of unconfirmed accusations and media criticism. This puts a strain on dedicated professionals who have devoted their lives to the care of their horses and the sport. The FEI emphasizes that necessary changes must come from within the sport itself, through a shared commitment to horse welfare and sporting excellence.
The association reaffirms its willingness to engage in dialog, learning and continuous change. Criticism is important, but a blanket condemnation of the entire equestrian community is not expedient. Progress requires cooperation and a constructive atmosphere in which everyone involved can continue to develop without having to fear public ostracism.
The FEI appeals to the media to continue to fulfill their important role in equestrian sport with integrity and accuracy and to ensure fair, objective reporting.
