Veterinary office clears up incident

A walker discovered the remains of a horse carcass in a meadow near Iserlohn on Monday evening. The alerted police handed the case over to the veterinary office of the Märkischer Kreis district, which confirmed the discovery. The bones were badly decomposed and additionally damaged by the use of a manure spreader.

According to the veterinary office, the carcass came from an old dung heap that had been left untouched for at least five to six years. The current livestock owner only took over the farm later and, according to his own statements, knew nothing about the remains. The previous owner - his father - had deposited deceased animals near the dung heap in the past.

Although the authorities say that the current owner is not to blame, the pressure on the breeding operation is growing. Members of the Westfälisches Pferdestammbuch withdrew their confidence in the horse breeder concerned and decided at a district meeting not to reappoint him as a delegate. In the past, there had already been criticism of the way the animals were kept - from horses dying in barbed wire fences to deficiencies in feed supply and pasture fencing.
