On Saturday morning, a horsebox caught fire on the A1 near Hindelbank in the canton of Bern. At around 7.30 a.m., the vehicle, which was traveling towards Zurich, caught fire for as yet unexplained reasons. According to the Bern cantonal police, the truck quickly caught fire and a thick black cloud of smoke was visible from afar.
Thanks to quick intervention, the driver and helpers were able to free the two horses from the burning vehicle in time. Neither the animals nor the driver suffered any injuries. The fire department, police and an ambulance were quickly on the scene, but the latter did not have to be deployed.
The vehicle was completely destroyed. The rescued horses were later taken over by a farrier with a replacement transporter. The A1 was temporarily impaired during the fire-fighting work.
