Horse owners can now have their animals examined at Leipzig University using a new computer tomograph. Since the beginning of the year, the veterinary clinic at Leipzig University has had a CT scanner specially adapted for horses, which offers significantly improved diagnostic options.

As clinic director Prof. Kerstin Gerlach explained, it is now also possible to precisely image areas that are difficult to access, such as the cervical spine or shoulder joints - in some cases even while standing and without general anaesthetic. Head examinations in particular only require sedation, which considerably reduces the risk of anesthesia for the horses. The device, which costs around 850,000 euros, was financed by funds from the Free State of Saxony and the German Research Foundation. In addition, around 582,000 euros were invested in the conversion of the clinic hall.
