During the Jumping International Bordeaux on February 8, 2025, the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) and the International Stud Book Committee (ISBC) signed a cooperation agreement that is important for thoroughbred horse breeding. This lays the foundation for the recognition of thoroughbreds in sport and sport horse breeding and promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience between both breeding communities.
The agreement results from discussions between the European and Mediterranean Horseracing Federation (EMHF), the WBFSH , the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) and the ISBC . It resulted in Thoroughbreds being officially recognised in all FEI competitions since 2024. Previously, despite their significant sporting achievements, they were often listed as "breed unknown" because they were not registered in a WBFSH member stud book.
WBFSH President Jan Pedersen stressed the importance of cooperation for the identification, traceability and health and welfare of horses in sport. A joint council, which meets annually, is intended to promote the exchange of knowledge.
Simon Cooper , Vice-Chairman of the ISBC, also underlined the long-term importance of the agreement for the future of thoroughbred breeding. The cooperation is also intended to strengthen the use of thoroughbreds in Olympic disciplines and enable former racehorses to have a second career in the sport.
