Hay shaker enables standardized analysis of hay dust particles

Contents

A team of researchers at the Swiss Institute of Equine Medicine has developed an innovative method for the standardized measurement of dust pollution from hay. The so-called Hay Shaker (HS) device generates dust from hay samples in a controlled manner and enables precise analysis of the particle sizes PM1, PM2.5, PM4 and PM10. A study with 50 horses showed that feeding behavior in particular has a significant influence on dust pollution in the breathing zone. Horses that were in intensive contact with the hay had significantly higher levels of particulate matter. The new method allows an objective evaluation of the dust development of different hay qualities and can therefore contribute to a better selection of feed in order to reduce respiratory diseases such as equine asthma.
