StiKo Vet confirms recommendation for EHV vaccination in horses

Comprehensive immunization protects herds and reduces disease risks

Contents

In a recent statement, the Standing Committee on Vaccination in Veterinary Medicine (StiKo Vet) continues to advocate equine herpesvirus (EHV) vaccination as a core vaccination. Based on a comprehensive analysis of numerous studies, the Commission confirms the efficacy and immunological safety of the vaccines.

The study shows clear advantages of immunization: vaccinated horses fall less seriously ill, shed the virus for a shorter time and in smaller quantities. In addition, consistent herd vaccination helps to break chains of infection and reduce the general risk of infection.

Contrary to some fears, no definite link between vaccination and severe neurological courses of EHV infection was found. On the contrary, the data show that a high vaccination rate significantly reduces the risk of severe disease progression.

StiKo Vet therefore continues to recommend nationwide herpes vaccination in order to ensure the long-term protection of horse populations and effectively contain outbreaks.
